What's in a name, and perfect discussions are ... private?

I am sure that everyone has some rhyme or reason to what name they chose to be called. For example I am CoCo_Nut. I was just wondering what your reason for your name on the blog was.

In case you are wondering what my reason was, here it is. I am a fan of the
Color Computer from the 80's and so I call it by it's nickname: "the CoCo" (short for COlor COmputer). People who like the CoCo call themselves Coco-nuts so I adopted the name.

My second question here is of a different
topic. What do you think about these discussions being viewable to anyone who happens to stumble upon them? Do you think that this is a positive thing in the discussion or not? In the classroom the discussions are unrecorded and unpublished. Are your answers and questions in class different from your ones here on the blog?

Well, there is my contribution to this blog for now, and I look forward to seeing your responses.

  2. Simply, First and Mid Name. Something I carry that cannot change, even as I do.

  3. My name is pense because thats my last name, i didnt want to be orginal and put my firt and last or just my first so i put my last, some people think its original but i never do use just my last name. So its not original to me.

  5. I go by Mr. Humphrey on the blog because I want people who look at it -- parents, administrators, school board members, what have you -- to know immediately that there is a teacher involved in this little site. I also use that because I have tried in the past to allow students to call me something else -- usually Dusty -- and too many of them can't handle it. They get so overstimulated by the idea of calling a teacher by a first name (Even a nickname! How titillating!) that they can't stop doing it: they yell my name and wave vigorously every single chance they get, which gets annoying. So while I am a teacher, and you are my students, it's Humphrey, please. The Mr. is optional, though I prefer it within classroom walls.

My usual online tag is Coffeesaint, or St. Coffee, and that's a long story that I am sure will come up elsewhere.

As to having discussions in public, I think it valuable to learn how to speak (write) knowing that your words will be heard (seen), but not necessarily influenced by those who hear or see them. That's life for a published writer, after all -- the work is already done by the time you get audience feedback, so while it is important to write to your audience, you also have to learn to ignore them. Hence, blogging.

I have currently locked the comments so that only class members can participate. I am willing to change that if the class wishes.

  6. Mr. Humphrey, I agree that it is a positive fact in that it teaches people how to talk/write in front of other people, whether in person or on blogs; however, some people don't seem to care if they are writing in front of millions of people or just in their private journal. (ex. Link's first post on September 19.) Of course I know that it is upon their own heads if they choose to mouth off at the world.

  7. I choose rain_child cause I am a rain child. I love being in it, I love the sound. Everything. My favorite thing to do is walk barefoot in the rain.

  8. Oh, I thought it was a pun on the word brainchild.

  9. I chose just my first name because that's what I'm called. I don't really feel like Michaela is "who" I am but until I find something better I'm sticking with it.

  10. I feel that every one has a right to voice there opinions to the world, even if they are rants, even if they are dumb and childish.
It's easy to relieve your anger by typing a few dozen words and feeling better saying it, even if it's done on a blog or in real life. So get a heart and realize that your apart of a classroom were a group of TEENAGERS that have been given the right to say any childish, immature thing we want CoCo_nut

  11. And I understood that people were cabable of reading my post, but quite honestly I couldn't care less if people read it, and or commented, I was simply venting, which is extremly good for mental health

  12. Sorry, I shouldn't have used your post as an example. I know that everyone has their own way of venting, but I just somehow didn't recognize your post as one. My way of venting generally involves throwing whatever comes to hand across the room or at one of my four younger brothers. My mom says this doesn't accomplish anything, but I notice that I feel better after throwing it then if I didn't. In this sense I must say that it really is good for mental health.
Honestly if I hold it in for too long then I start throwing bigger objects much harder. Gotta restrain myself though. Last time I almost broke my watch.

  13. Um because anything else that im called is either one; insulting; or two personal

  14. I personally didnt care enough to do anything else but my name.

  15. My first and last name put together with number four for the month I was born in.

  16. Um, I'm listed as Nate because that's my name...
And I don't really care if anyone reads this so whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i totally agree with Nate except my name is Caelish and belive be i didnt pick that,.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Um.. I Don't know why I picked this name. I guess because it's my name?
and I don't think really anyone out of class reads this. Except the people that hit the 'Next blog' and goes to a random one, like this.

  19. Because anything else would be personal, and I didn't feel like being personal for a school project.

  20. I chose Leni Wells because it's my full name and I didn't want to put anything cute like "Meowmeowcutefacejingle0201" or something like that as my username because that wouldn't be very appropriate since this is for a class assignment.

  21. My name is Emily because that is my name. And I don't think it's a good idea to let other people read our discussions because it's already hard for me to voice my opinion to all of you...I'm too shy for my own good. :P

    ReplyDelete
  22. I used my name because it is what I am used to. It isn't Rebecca, Becka, Becca, or Becky. BECCAH. Just Beccah.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, Luke H i guess is pretty self explanatory. Also, kind of what Beccah said, its Luke, NOT Lucas. grr.

And for reading our discussions, fine. As far as letting anonymous people post and what not...no. That would be bad.

  24. cuz its just a name. its a waste of time to dwell on something that trivial. i think others should be able to view and comment on the blog to get a wider range of views

  25. Sarah, its my name. I dont get this... lol

    ReplyDelete
  26. well i used katz_amanda cuz its my first name and my last name
