Is there something that defines us, separates us from the rest of the population, or are we all just little specks of meaningless nothing sent to this earth for no reason at all?
I would truly like to know what makes you you, and your take on what we are meant for.
I myself have thought and thought about this question. I see so many things that define me, but when i look at others I can find those same traits. Is it even possible for anyone to be unique? I like to think I'm different, I tell myself this everyday.
Honestly, I have no answer to my own questions. I guess that could be the reason I chose to ask all of you guys. I wish I could just find some sort of answer.
There are cases where you can feel lost in a sea of sameness. What makes us truly unique is being able to recognize what we are as a whole. As a human being, we are unique. Have you ever seen anyone who looks like you? Do they look exactly like you? Even that may not be enough, so what separates us from the crowd?
ReplyDeleteEvery person, man, woman, child, is an individual in some aspect. Whether it's collecting something unusual or having a peculiar talent, we are all unique. Even if our DNA matches, are we carbon copies of each other?
So what really does make us who we are? Think of it this way: if we weren't unique, what would our purpose here be? To eat resources and wreak havoc on the planet? I doubt it.
As to what makes me me, I am proud of what I am. I believe that life is worth living through the ups and downs. I may have some qualities that others don't appreciate, but I am who I am, and no one but myself can change that. My policy on life is that no one is truly ugly, no one is rude and conniving through and through. You are what you think you are, and if you believe yourself beautiful, you are beautiful.
This question reminded me of something Mr. Rash once said. I quote "You're special... just like everybody else!"
ReplyDeleteI do agree that sometimes you dont feel any different than those around you, yet you know they are nothing like the REAL you. I believe that what makes someone the real "them" is their spirit or soul. Features and likes and dislikes and talents may be similar or the same as others, but no one can have the same spirit you do. I think it to be the most indivdual thing you have. Like Mr. Rash said, your special, but everyone is too. So you must be in your own way.
I personally HOPE that I am more than a speck!!!;) But, no, I think we have a purpose, that I have a purpose. Why would anything be piontless? That doesn't make sence in my mind. If we are so living, so real, so individual must there be a reason we exist?
This Question is quite a soul searcher...I must admit. I see why you think about it. It's very valid. I'm almost feeling the same way, with no direct answer.
The problem here is that there is no way to determine what makes us who we are: not only are there too many influences for us to understand and consider them all (think of the butterfly effect -- the chaos theory, not that craptastic movie with Ashton freaking Kutcher), but there is also the observer effect, the fact that the very act of observing, of knowing something, changes the thing you are observing -- this comes from quantum mechanics, and I'm not explaining it well. Let me back up: the observer effect is the idea that the act of measuring something changes the thing measured -- when you move something to put it on a scale, you add or subtract a certain amount of the weight, by changing its position in local gravitational fields, because a speck of dirt comes off of your finger, because your finger rubs off a microscopic flake of the object. This is clearer in psychology, where it is called the Hawthorne effect -- which describes how test subjects will modify their behavior if they know they are being tested.
ReplyDeleteSo essentially, if you knew everything that had influenced you to make you who you are, that knowledge would change how those things influence you, because you would make some judgments about which influences were more important or better, and those influences would become more important and others would become less.
So stop worrying about it, 'kay? As for whether or not you are unique: of course you are. Other people have traits similar to your own, but nobody has your traits, not all of them. Your abilities, combined with your unique perspective and your individual experiences, make you different. Every day you live, you are more different from other people. That's why I'm weirder than you.
Im not to sure what made me who i am but i know my youth group has probably had the biggest influence on that.
ReplyDeletei know your mommy and daddy made you! He He He! But I no what you really meant.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I'm not 100% sure who I am. I'm still learning, growing, and living. Right now I could say I'm a teenager with a bucket of chaos in her hands, and hidden pocket of serene in the other. I think I will know what makes me who I am, when I have lived my life... to the very end.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I just know that I'm me and that I don't need to worry about what defines me from the rest! I know we are sent here for a purpose and it's our job to find out what that purpose is.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea. I just know that I'm me and that I don't need to worry about what defines me from the rest.
ReplyDeleteMy family, my friends and my obsessions make me, me.
ReplyDeleteEight now I am starting to shape into who I am, and more of that will be coming in the future.
ReplyDelete"Remember, you're special. Just like everyone else."

I really don't know what defines me.
ReplyDeleteI think that everyone is unique...but I don't know what defines me, or why we are who we are.
ReplyDeleteI think you just grow up the way you grow up and whatever influenced you young has the power to affect you as you are getting older. You are a person to some degree that others shaped you and to some degree that you choose to be shaped.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely my family, and friends. makes you wonder how much different you would be if you were part of a different family.
ReplyDeleteunderminiable. the best way to determin this is to take in every thing about you and make a milkshake and see what flavor u end up with
ReplyDeleteWhat makes us who we are? Our heart, our soul and our mind!
ReplyDeleteI think our experiences and how we handle shape our perspective, emtions, train of thought and the way we make decisions.
ReplyDeleteBut I also think, that there is a lot more to it that I am not in the mood to attempt.
