Lie Lie Lie!
I think it is complete rubbish that it should be morally wrong to lie. There is a time to lie, and a time to tell the truth. Of course we should make it a habit to be truthful to people, after all, relationships are rarely better off when built on lies, but it's complete craziness to suggest lying makes you a bad person. There are many instances when when I find it would be perfectly acceptable to lie. May it be for your own sake, or another's. I think as human beings, we have a responsibility to be able to discern when the time for truth is, and when the time for deception is at hand. It's not a question of if lying in itself is a "bad" thing, it's a question of if we can handle the responsibilities of it.

Can we get an example of when it would be acceptable to lie? A hypothetical situation? Especially when relationships are generally more solid when built on truth?
ReplyDeleteMr. Humphrey, I would find it perfectly alright to lie in trivial situations, such as "Do I look fat?" or perhaps, "Did you really pet a pygmy owl over the summer?" If this lie will not lead to any harm of yourself or anyone else. I don't think just because other people think they are entitled to the complete truth all the time, that they are. And let me rephrase my sentence: Relationships you care to keep are better off built on the truth.
ReplyDeleteGood qualification about relationships. And I don't believe "Do I look fat?" is always a trivial question. Some people mean it, and some people, though they may not mean it, need to hear the truth, for the sake of the public weal and their own health.
ReplyDeleteDid you really pet a pygmy owl over the summer?
I agree, lying isn't bad as long as it doesn't lead to serious consequence, and doesn't turn you into a liar.
ReplyDeleteLying isn't bad if it's a little white lie, like telling a girl she looks beautiful, when really she looks like a hog. But I think it's important that people try to tell the truth.
