Spirit? Ha!

I figured I'd make this post colorful. If you're colorblind, good luck reading it.

As to the the title of my post, I don't have school spirit because school spirit is centered around sports; I am not a sports fan.

I think that all schools are about learning, not about rooting for your favorite team. Playing some type of sport is a good workout, and can be fun for some, but school should not revolve around them. I also find that taking forty-five minutes plus out of our school day to attend an obscenely loud (I have sensitive ears, so ear-splitting), overrated assembly is simply a waste of time. I won't say that people who go to these assemblies and have fun are crazy, I'm just saying that I hate pep assemblies. What good is pride in a school that finances sports instead of... buying more copies of science books, or paying teachers a higher salary (they are teaching the future of our country!), or even fixing up the disgusting restrooms? Not to mention that pep assemblies are about competition between classes. I think that it's stupid that pep assemblies are mandatory. I especially think that having a pep assembly where people just melt blocks of ice with their butts is just stupid (I heard this really happened... I'm glad I missed that assembly).

Most of our teachers are coaches, and that's perfectly fine, but I have seen teachers where everything revolves around SPORTS! Memorabilia, trophies, and pictures of LIONS cover their rooms' walls! For example, a Health teacher, they are supposed to be teaching us how to keep our bodies healthy, so a touch on sports is just fine, but mentioning it every lesson is unnecessary. A Social Studies teacher should have pictures relating to history, not football.

The only thing I like about pep assemblies is that I get to leave school early. My mom gives me a note to get out of every one, including homecoming this Friday.

Rant over.

  1. I don't think that our school assemblies are revolving around sports. Yeah they introduce athletes but at homecoming and other assemblies the do academic rewards (not a sport), The band play (also NOT a sport), and have random people from your class participate in some of the games (hmm.. not a sport!) So I don't agree with this. Also, I have had health with all the teachers, and have never gotten sports in every lecture. Actually, I haven't gotten sports in any of my lectures. The most they ever talk about sports is probably once a week when they tell the students what games are going on, other than that, I don't hear sports that much from any of the coach/teachers. And for having lions around their classrooms? Doesn't mean that it's about sports. You do know the lion is our school mascot right? I think all the teachers have lions around their rooms, maybe not as much as some teachers, but they still do. Even the teachers that AREN'T coaches. Pep assemblies aren't funded either, it's ran by the students, not by the state, or school. Most classes don't put a penny into pep assemblies. I'd say that pep assemblies are probably 5 dollars total. Funded probably from our ASB treasurer. And if a class does put money into homecoming, winter festival, etc, they do fundraisers FOR that. So either way they wouldn't be able to buy new... anything. I can understand how you would rather be out of a loud gym, but think of what our school would be like without pride. Nothing would get done, including anything that has to do with academics. Nobody would run for ASB, or class officers, and nobody would want to be there. School would be somewhat boring. Pride is a way to get the student's who aren't that interested in school, interested. That's just my opinion though.

  3. Speaking of homecoming I don't even know who won the game. (There was a game, right?)

  4. This is the problem with using personal experience in debates: different people remember the same experiences different ways -- as with Lauren and Alana hearing different things from the health teachers. I think it highly likely that the truth lies somewhere between what the two of you said -- sports probably aren't mentioned in every class in Health, but I'm confident they are mentioned more than just an announcement about the games that week. Only because we teachers talk about our personal lives, and the health teachers are coaches and sports fans and so on, and so I'm sure it comes up fairly regularly -- but since Alana is annoyed by it, and Lauren isn't, these mentions stand out to Alana and not to Lauren.

Oh, and two small things for Lauren: Alana was saying the school shouldn't fund sports, but should put the money into academic pursuits, and while the pep assemblies may not cost the school anything (They do, actually, but money wouldn't be saved by cutting them, it would just be spent on class time, so your point remains) sports certainly cost the school quite a bit. I know student athletes shoulder a pretty heavy chunk of the cost -- but the athletics program costs a whole lot. And I think you should be proud of your opinion and your willingness to speak up here, so don't soften it at the end by saying it's "just" your opinion. You weren't nasty or cruel in your comment, so don't back away from it. Nothing wrong with disagreeing.

Oh yeah: and I don't have any lions up in the room. Just sayin'.
