I personally really like pep assemblies. They are a good way to get your whole class involved, and make school interesting. I just wish our class would get involved. I think we could probably win pep assemblies if people would just step out of their comfort zone and get into them. I think the problem is people think they look stupid if they yell or something, and think they are cool if they just sit there. What's the point of going then? You're just ruining it for the people who want to be there. You might as well just skip and go do what you want instead of making your class look bad, because for everyone who just sits there, You DO make our class look bad. And plus, you don't look cool when you just sit there, you just look stupid. I think that when our class does come together, we are unstoppable, I mean look, We got first place on our homecoming float 2 years in a row, and we've beaten the class ahead of us in pep assemblies. Also we came close to 2nd place in homecoming by 7 points last year. And we were really close this year. I just hope that people understand where I'm coming from. I don't expect people to buy stuff for assemblies I just wish people would at least be loud, and support our class. Hopefully it will be better next pep assembly. Good job on homecoming class of 2012. We came really close to winning!

I totally get where you are coming from but as one of the kids that would rather sit down instead of cheering I'd just like to say that being cursed at to stand up make me want to sit even more that I did before. I wish that there was some way to get everyone involved though because in my group of friends most of us have said that they want to get more involved but it doesn't really seem like we are needed. There are just so many people that what's the difference if we stay sitting down? We aren't trying to look "cool" by not standing we just don't really care! When there is something that means enough to me that I really care if we win or not then I promise to stand and shout just as much as then next person!
ReplyDeleteIt just seems tough to have spirit for a school that only celebrates one thing: FOOTBALL, and sports etc. To be honest I think school should just be for learning and if not, then involve other clubs and such. They should make everyone feel important and feel like they can actually relate to what the whole pep assembly is about. Most people don't play football or any sports. We don't think it's cool, we just think it's dumb that we have to cheer for something we don't care about. Everyone trying to force us to stand up just makes us want to sit down more, TRUST ME. Even If I am not there now I would still definitely be the one sitting.
ReplyDeleteThis is for Michaela, you may be the ones sitting down, but there is never to many people to be helping. Just ask some one and if they dont know most of the people you would ask would pioint you to a way of someone who does know what there should be going on. And I agree with Lauren, (not trying to be mean) but we dont look cool when half of our class is standing and then there is just big blobs of people in between us sitting. And congrats Class of 2012 we will get it again next year!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to point out the irony of criticizing people for being overly concerned with their personal reputation (sitting down because they worry about looking cool), when your goal is to increase concern for -- the class's personal reputation (standing up to look spirited). That said, I do understand how annoying it is when people refuse to help simply out of apathy, which is the reason for the majority of the class (though not Michaela). I get the same thing when I try to run a discussion and I get a classroom full of zombie stares. It would certainly be nice if everyone could find the gumption to participate and have fun doing it -- but the simple fact is, not everyone has fun doing it. What would be their motivation for participating, then? Because if they don't, then you don't have as much fun? That sucks, but why should other people worry about that? Do YOU worry about when THEY are having fun?
ReplyDeleteSee, in my case, I know that my students are not here to make my life easy, so I don't blame them when they resist my attempts to make the class more interesting, as tempting as it is to do that. I used to get mad at them, and yell at them, but it had no positive effect; if they weren't going to participate, then they weren't going to participate, and that was that. Which is why I try to let people make their own choice, to succeed in my class or not, and I don't take their choices personally. I grieve for the ones who make the choice I think is wrong, but I let them make that choice.
If there is no way to allow people the freedom to choose participation or not -- if universal participation is necessary for the thing to work -- then maybe the pep assemblies shouldn't exist. Isn't freedom more important than a win for the class?
