Topic #9 It Shouldn't Matter, It's Human Nature.
Let me just start off by saying that I friggen hate talking about this topic and every time it gets brought up I want to cut my ears(or I guess in this case eyes because I'm staring at a screen) off. It's not that I don't care, it's that it doesn't matter. So I'm just gonna get this over with. Men are macho, men do work, men chop wood, men provide. Women cook, women have babies, women love, women nurture. But these roles could be completely reversed, well except for the having babies part. Men and Women need each other. Men can survive without women. Women can survive with out men. It really just depends on the individual. So stop asking me about it.

Okay, clearly the more interesting discussion here is why this brings so much rage from you. Okay, it's a question that comes up often in school journal-type discussions, but that's because it's a vital discussion to get into, and it's always worth thinking about and exploring. The entire reason we have the levels of institutional homophobia we do in this country, in this state which has a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, is because people have rigid, unrealistic concepts of gender roles. A large part of the reason we have the divorce rate we do is the same thing, because husbands and wives expect certain things of each other, largely based on expected gender roles. Women get paid less, and abused more; men die earlier and suffer more stress -- because of gender roles. Now maybe you've already solved the problem by saying "It's just human nature so stop asking me about it," and maybe there's more to it than that. Why are Honors English classes predominantly female? Why do girls generally do better in academic classes, and why are the shop classes almost entirely male-dominated? Because it's just human nature and I should stop asking you about it?
ReplyDeleteDon't throw a fit, man, make a point. Tell me why this question enrages you so very much -- and if your only answer is it doesn't matter and you're tired of talking about things that don't matter, then, first, pull your head out, and secondly, tell me what DOES matter.
